Activity 1 (Sexual Harassment )

Sexual Harassment
In today’s sexual sensitive workplace, both men and women are becoming more aware of their words and actions.  Women are learning that “innocent” moves like brushing back hair or “nervous” moves, like crossing and uncrossing legs, can be misinterpreted as provocative.
One body language expert says that a lot of good-hearted men are realizing that their old behavior isn’t appropriate anymore.  Pats, hugs, and neck rubs are out.  Similarly, a man shouldn’t shake a woman’s hand for more than a few seconds.  In fact, any touching by men or women should be light, brief, and in a neutral zone: the elbow or shoulder.  Touching superiors of either sex is always taboo.
Men and women are becoming more sensitive because of litigation surrounding sexual harassment.  Just what is sexual harassment? According to the law, sexual harassment consists of unwelcome sexual advances, requests of sexual favors, and other verbal or nonverbal, or physical conduct of a sexual nature when
  • Submission of such conduct is made either explicitly or implicitly a term or condition of employment.
  • Submission to or rejection of such conduct by an individual is used as a basis for employment decisions affecting that person or third parties.
  • Such conduct has the purpose of unreasonably interfering with an individual’s work performance or creating an intimidating, hostile, or offensive working environment.
In a broader sense, according to communication experts, sexual harassment is anything that a victim believes is a sexual harassment.  The most notable case of alleged sexual harassment came in the US Senate confirmation hearings for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. Attorney and Law professor Anita Hill, a former colleague of Judge Thomas, testified that Thomas’s sexual jokes and discussions of pornographic films at the office constituted sexual harassment.
It’s wise to remember that men and women perceive behavior differently. A man may think a touch on the hand is innocent, but a woman may view it as a prelude to a sexual advance.
Suppose a professor says to Lisa, his student, “That dress looks great on your body.”  Although the professor meant to compliment Lisa’s fitness and her taste in clothes, Lisa considers it asexual comment and complains to her dean.  Using the guidelines presented here, should the dean consider this incident as sexual harassment?  What lessons can be learned from this incident? Discuss your response in a report to your instructor or in small groups(Guffey,1998).

  7. I think that incident should not be considered as a sexual harassment because according to the law, as long as Lisa's dress was tore and the professor made some moves that should not suppose to do to her, right, that should be consider but he only commented her dress that really fits to her, no reasons for us to say that it is a sexual harassment.

The lesson for that example is as long as you don't think or anticipate once situation that you don't want to do unto you, it will really never happens to you.Don't be judge mental and of course, if you notice that there's something wrong with that comment(e.g. comment of the professor to Lisa),maybe you should something in order for you to not receive that asexual comment.Try to change your dress from just a piece of toupees into a mummy's dress or mini skirt into a ghost dress, something like that. I think the lesson in this case is don't think anything if somebody tells you a good comment or compliment.

  29. In my opinion, this incident should not be consider as sexual harassment. Why? Because the professor didn't even touch her. So how will she said that this is a sexual harassment. In fact, she would be thankful that her professor comment on her.

The lesson in this situation is that, every one of us should not be more malicious of what others do or said to us. We should think of what is it means.

  48. In Lisa's situation, this incident cannot be considered as sexual harassment it`s only her who thinks that it was.

I think the lesson in this case is don't think anything wrong about somebody who tells any comment about how do you look. Just try to be more positive.

  50. For me this situation should not treat as a sexual harassment, if she think she was harassed on that way that was act of immaturity.
Lisa's Teacher was just expressing his opinion on Lisa's outfit.

The Lesson in this situation is that over conservative and over sensitive isn't always right. Sometimes you should assure first that what you were thinking was confirmed. And try to be more friendly.

  55. on my opinion,..
this case might be considered a sexual harassment, maybe the professor did not directly showed his sexual desire for his student but it's not a usual thing for a professor to give a comment like that on his student specifically for a female student.

the lesson in this situation is: before you say something that might be cosidered as sexual harassment, you better keep your comment on your self. we should also keep in mind that we have different culture, some can consider your simple gesture as an harassment.

  105. I think the incident should not be considered as sexual harassment because the situation is not that severe cause it was only ment to compliment her not to harass her. As long as she was not touched by the professor she cannot file a case on sexual harassment. If the case is still the same and the professor still is saying those things to her then she can complain to the dean that she is being harassed verbally.

The lessons for the example is not to exaggerate the situation just analyze the situation closely before you decide to do something about it. And to the one being harassed verbally just change the one they are saying, you are the one that’s causing them to say those unnecessary compliments. =)

  176. For me , incident should not be considered as a sexual harassment because according to the law, as long as Lisa's dress was tore and the professor made some moves that should not suppose to do to her, right, that should be consider but he only commented her dress that really fits to her, no reasons for us to say that it is a sexual harassment.
every one of us should not be more malicious of what others do or said to us. We should think of what is it means.
