DEVELOPMENTAL READING


  1. Getting Familiar with the Author
  2. This does not mean telling about the biography of the author. This means examining throughly his work. Finding not what made him write this work and what personality he has which can be detected from his work/creation.
  3. Literary Type
  4. Telling the literary type used in writing through the tone and emotion it has.
  5. Objective
  6. Examining the significance of the work. Does it aim to contradict,to protest, to convince, or to persuade?
  7. Tone or Subject
  8. Is it significant? Is it believable? Does it respond to the sensibility of the reader? Does it raise the curiosity of the reader?
  9. Characters
  10. Are the characters picture of the real people in the society they belong?
    Are they characters who do/do not exist in the time they belong?
    Are they characters who create, destroy, living or dying?
  11. Setting
  12. Giving emphasis in environment and time covered by the work based on how it is being witnessed by an individual caused by his status or by his relationship to self, to others, and to society.
  13. Plot
  14. Does the work discuss a very common issue?
    Does it have any unfamiliar event?
    Are there old events with new features angles, or foresight?
    How are the events put together?
    Is there unity in the series of events from beginning to end?
    What message is given in the work as a whole?
    Have you learned anything from it?
  15. Thoghts/Ideas
  16. A literary work gives and explains the common thoughts, accept and proves all the real situations and events. These thought can be denied, justified, renewed, or changed. Are these realities universal, natural, enviromental, controlling one’s life? It is important to examine the thoughts used in the work as basis for the description of the events.
  17. Style Used in Writing
  18. Does the author use a very effective language in writing?
    Does it suit the level of the reader’s understanding?
  19. Summary
